Description

The starting point for this walk was a carpark at the end of a gravel road that comes off Apollo Road 500 meters before it reaches the Honeysuckle Creek camping ground. From the car park we headed along a narrow walking trail with dense growth in some parts.

The climb was fairly steep up to the ridge, rising from 1075 meters to over 1300 meters in  just over 1 kilometer walking. The view from the top where we had our first views from Booroomba Rocks to the north.

We spent some time exploring the rocks, and particularly the 1353 meter elevation peak on the northeast of the ridge. We returned the same way we had come.

Though very scenic, this is quite a short walk considering the long drive to the start point. There are longer alternative routes to Booroomba Rocks:

  • Starting at the Honeysuckle Creek camping ground on Apollo Road and following Australian Alps Walking Track to Booroomba Rocks Walk. This would be 10.5 kilometers return.

  • Starting at Mt Tennent Fire Trail where it meets Apollo Road about 3.5 kilometers from Naas Road, then walking up the Mt Tennent and Bushfold Flats fire trails and Australian Alps Walking Track which takes you to Booroomba Rocks Walk. This would be 18.5 kilometers return.

Description

This walk starts at the Orroral Tracking Station picnic area. The well-signposted track heads in a roughly westerly direction into the tree line where it becomes quite steep. There are some good views from the track back towards the Orroral Valley.

Eventually we made it up to the Lunar Laser Ranger building on the top of the ridge.

Here there was a fenced lookout with spectacular views over the valley below.

We went back to the picnic area the same way we came up. Given the quality of some of the above photographs my camera was retired from active service as soon as I returned from this bushwalk. This is a really nice short walk. A great introduction to the Orroral Valley.
